Mg2C, also known as magnesium carbide, is a hard refractory metallic compound with the formula MgC. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and forms ladder-like double chains bridged by tri- and tetradentate oxalate ligands, with Na+ cations located between the chains to balance charge. The oxalate group is coordinated to the carbonyl oxygen of water molecules via O-O hydrogen bonds.

It is used to make tungsten carbide (WC; commonly called, simply, carbide when referring to machine tooling) and cemented carbide (Fe3C), both of which are important industrial materials. Mg2C is a member of the family of ionic carbides, which are distinguished by their tendency to decompose in water, producing methane.
